FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPT OF GEOMETRY



01. GEOMETRY

i. The word Geometry (Greek - "Geo" - Earth ; "Metron" - Measurement) means "Earth's                        Measurement".               

ii. Geometry is primarily concerned with the characteristics of figures as well as shapes .

iii. The branch of mathematics which deals with the properties, measurement and relationship of plane  and solid figures with points, lines, angles, planes, surfaces, etc. is called geometry.

iv. Euclid  ( 325 BCE - 265 BCE ) is the father ( or mother ) of geometry. Full name of Euclid is in Greek  "Eukleides"  ( flourished 300 BCE , Alexandria, Egypt ).

v. Euclid contributed "The Elements -  is a mathematical treatise consisting of 13 books". It is a collection of definitions, postulates, propositions and mathematical proofs of the propositions.

02. USES OF GEOMETRY

i. Geometry is used in determining the lengths ,areas, volumes, etc.

ii. It is used in the construction of buildings, temples, roads, dams in rivers, etc.

iii. It is used in art.

iv. It is used in computer graphics.

v. It is used in interior designing.

vi. It is used in measuring orbits and planetary motions.

vii. It is employed in the field of astronomy to map the distance between stars and planets and between different planets.

i. Archimedes (287 BC - 212 BC) is known as the father of mathematics, born in Syracuse, the Greek   island of Sicily.

ii. BC =  Before Christ

iii. AD =  Anno Domini

iv. BCE =  Before Common (Current) Era  is a secular version of BC (Before Christ).

v. Common  (Current) Era is a secular equivalent of AD (Anno Domini, means in the year of Lord in Latin).
